I haven't seen the movie, read the book. Krakauer is a fine writer whose journalistic roots show. <---- that's a good thing.
I'm very ambivalent about McCandless: I get his desire to get away, but the practical part of me is yelling get prepared! take a survival class!
Yeah but that's kind of the point of the book, I guess. That he was young, reckless, and stupid. But Krakauer admits that he was, too, and that kind of hubris is not terribly uncommon in the young.
Haven't read the book, but loved the movie! Especially Eddie Vedder's terrific soundtrack.

McCandless has been criticised a lot for his impracticality (stupidity, some might call it) but at the risk of sounding callous (which I don't intend to be), his dimmed instinct for self-preservation is charming and eye-opening.

You've made me want to read the book.
[this is good]
I haven't read the book neither seen the movie but nevertheless have been informed about this story in the past and find it amazing that young people go off on a tangent like this.
